Os Grandes Musicais (2018)

Os Grandes Musicais (The Great Musicals) was a year-end show for dance instructor Gisele Albano's students from three different schools, Conservatório Musical Jardim América, Cia Terra and Instituto Cuida de Mim.
Her student shows don't have a set or an MC, it's an open stage for the students to perform, and instead they rely heavily on graphic design and screen projections to set the tone, engage the audience and establish the pace. The show starts with an introductory video presenting the show, the students and crew, followed by the making of a rehearsal video, next the dance numbers start preceded by a short introduction of the choreography's theme. The shows run around two hours.
The theme for the 2018 show was famous musical theater, and consisted of twenty student numbers each inspired by a different musical. The required deliverables were a logo, poster, social media advertisement, t-shirts, videos for screen projections, and a DVD case.

Logo

The concept for this show is a big Broadway premiere, with spotlights, marquees, posters and billboards, to match the grandiosity of the theme. The visual style chosen was more vector-based and less realistic (I drew inspiration from the 1990’s Batman animated series) in order to keep it young as most of the students are kids and teenagers. The typeface I chose was Clarendon, for the vintage slab-serif feel it gives, and for resembling a marquees' shape. I also used Futura, a more current sans-serif typeface to create a nice contrast and for its simplicity and easy readable on the big screen.
The original colour for the T-shirts was red, as shown above, to match the marquee/logo, but in the end they were done in white because the supplier had a better deal for white t-shirts.
The purpose of the videos are to introduce the show, the performers and crew, and each student number. Each dance act was inspired by a different musical which I created short video (maximum of 1:30 minutes)  introductions. The videos contain archive images and essential information to educate the audience about each student’s number.
In total there were twenty student acts, plus the opening and closing videos and the rehearsal clips making a total of twenty-three videos. Below are six of them.
